What is ABA?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the applied branch of a science called Behavior Analysis. In other words, ABA uses science to understand behavior and then uses techniques that bring about meaningful, positive behavior changes. Many scientific studies have shown that ABA strategies are effective for children, teens, and adults with autism, though the level of improvement can vary depending on the person. ABA is known worldwide as a safe, effective treatment for autism, and it can greatly improve a person’s ability to live a more productive, social, and happy life.

ABA is not a therapy for autism. Rather, it is the science that forms the basis of nearly every autism therapy. ABA techniques can help promote ideal behaviors and decrease challenging and inappropriate behaviors, along with improving skills in communication, learning, interacting, and more.

Though Applied Behavior Analysis is a complex science that requires extensive training to become an expert in, it’s possible for anyone to learn the basics of ABA. With the basics under your belt, you can play a major role in your child’s treatment process.
